Finnegan Slept Here, Piran Scratches, by Veruš Villango
A collection of over 200 drawings inspired by and executed in Piran, Slovenia, where James Joyce (this is why he is on the cover) contracted the infection that led to the loss of his eyesight. These drawings are perhaps naive, yet precise, and always funny, amounting to a story of life in an Istrian city of primarily Venezian architecture.
I read in Richard Ellman's biography of Joyce that the blindness that beset him originated from a night of drinking in Pirano--now Piran, Slovenia--yet for the subsequent 18 years I have been unable to move authorities in Piran to recognize this rather important biographical fact. To their loss, of course, as even Ljubljana, where James and Nora spent a night after figuring out that what they thought was Trieste actually was not, ceremohially raised a plaque to mark that misadventure. From the drawing on the cover you can see how Hungarian musician and videographer (and scratcher) Veruš Villango sees that fragment of life and history. The 200 plus drawings draw laughter from me every time. You may trust me, or check instagram posts of various drawings over time.
